Windswept at San Clemente Pier

Another gorgeous location in Southern California – San Clemente Pier

I thought I would post a quick one tonight of a shot I recently took while exploring a few beach towns just north of Carlsbad, California. I loved the energy at the San Clemente Pier on this particular day, so I tried to capture it. The wind was driving pretty hard and the surf was responding with turbulent waves topped with a nice foamy surface. The flag was flapping violently and the birds were flying around erratically amongst the chaos.

This shot was taken from underneath the pier. With a 100mm prime lens on my camera, the only way to shoot without getting the support piles in the frame was to wait for the waves to move out to sea and then run up to the edge of the water and snap the picture. The waves would churn a couple of times and then they would rush up toward the beach while I ran away from them frantically to keep dry. I did this for about 20 minutes until I eventually soaked my feet while trying to frame up a shot. Since the waves and birds where integral to the scene, I had to take a bunch of shots until everything came together. I particularly liked the blurred effect on the splashing wave in the foreground. The camera settings were f/4.0 at 1/1000 of a second at a focal length of 100mm.

I really don’t see much blurring, Lee. I’m just awed at how you put several shots together to make one fabulous shot! Beautiful!

  4. Love the comp on this with the leading lines of the pier and the water splash.

  5. I love the image of you running up and back frantically. Well worth the effort.
