HD Video Postcard from Santa Monica Beach

| November 1, 2010

While I was in Santa Monica last summer, I shot some HD video with my Canon 5D Mark II DSLR. Since I needed an excuse to start learning Adobe After Effects I thought I would create a short video postcard for you featuring some of the footage from my three-hour stint on the beach. The Canon 5D shoots gorgeous video. I love how I was able to shoot straight into the sun without causing the folks in the shot to go completely black.

I used Adobe After Effects to edit the footage together and add the logo and titles. The lens flare effect you see was generated in After Effects as well, not by the camera. After Effects is a dangerous program. I think one could spend a lifetime sitting in from if it learning the tools. It is a pretty high end tool that professionals use for TV and movie productions. The season finale of the TV show “House” was shot with the very same camera I used for this video!

If you click the video resolution pop up in the lower right corner, you can select higher resolutions for your viewing pleasure. Try 720p if you have a high bandwidth connection. Pretty sweet!

Stunning images, Lee – you have such an eye. Any way to add the audio to your clip?

  2. Wow this is good stuff. I love how crisp it is – more worthy of Vimeo than YouTube! Great work.

Thank you all so much. I love watching these because it brings back the memories of just sitting there and taking it all in. It is really a nice beach.
