The Jungfrau region of Switzerland

The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (the Ogre, Monk and Maiden)

Here they are in all their glory – the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, also known as the Ogre, Monk and Maiden. They are the world famous trio of mountain peaks that serve as the impressive backdrop to the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. About two hours into our hike from Murren down to Lauterbrunnen, we came upon a clearing that provided this awe inspiring view of Bernese Oberland’s most impressive peaks. The Monk in the middle protects the Maiden on the right from the Ogre on the left. To me, the Maiden did not look like she needed protecting. Her massive and imposing stature is enough to make the strongest beast weak in the knees. It is hard not to become overcome with emotion in the presence of such beauty.

I saw the near perfect arrangement of masses as a ripe opportunity for a nice photograph. The backlit trees with their limbs glowing from the sunlight provided a nice contrast to the bright foreground and the peaks, which were tempered by the intervening atmosphere. The tiny wisps of clouds dutifully take their place, reminding onlookers of the scale of the immense geologic formations they adorn.

I truly appreciate all the emails and comments about my photography. I am happy you enjoy the posts and sharing in my travels. My goal is to bring as much of the journey home with me so that others can at least get a small taste of places they have not seen.
