A picture perfect barn at Ballenberg’s open air museum

We are back from China and not suffering jet lag so I thought I would revisit Switzerland tonight. This shot is from an amazing place called the Swiss Open Air Museum in Ballenberg, Switzerland. The museum showcases Switzerland as it used to be. It is host to more than one hundred century-old buildings from all over Switzerland, 250 farmyard animals, old-time gardens and fields, and demonstrations of local crafts. Getting from our hotel in Murren to Ballenburg required only public transportation but it did take about an hour and a half to get there. The journey took us beyond Interlaken past it’s beautiful lakes and pristine scenery by train, cable car and bus. I was not sure what kind of experience we were in for but I must say that it exceeded our expectations in every way. Not only is the architecture highly varied and beautiful, the surroundings were perfect in every way as well. These are not reproductions of historical buildings but actual structures that have been relocated for ultimate preservation. Quite an amazing feat if you ask me.

As you can see, it was raining when we arrived at the museum. If you look closely you can see the rain falling off of the roof and out the downspouts. I have never shot in the rain before and frankly, after this shot, I may do it again. Fortunately Donna, my photo sherpa, was with me. Imagine us in our rain repellent clothes and backpacks setting up the tripod and trying to keep the camera gear and ourselves dry with two umbrellas. I had to keep wiping off the lens to remove rain drops before taking each set of brackets. I am sure the other folks there thought we were nuts!

I think the rain and associated atmosphere made for a more interesting shot while boosting the color saturation of the grasses and trees. Oh, and the turkeys didn’t hurt either as they stood there in the rain as happy as can be. I guess the moral of the story is make the most of what is available when it comes to shooting photographs. What seems like a downer at first can actually open up doors creatively. I have a few more shots like this that I will share in the near future. Have a good week!
