Château de Chillion – morning light

The Fairy Tale Castle of Chillon

What could be more inspiring than a sparkling lake, distant hills and Alps rich with atmosphere, and of course a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop at the water’s edge? Not much! During our three-day stop in Montreux on Lake Geneva, Donna and I visited the Castle of Chillon, or the Château de Chillon, Switzerland’s most visited monument. I shot the castle at three different times of the day, which provided an opportunity to see how the time of day and weather impacted the visual impression of this wonderful subject. The morning shot at the top of the post was taken at about 8:30am as we walked to the castle for it’s 9am opening. The lakefront has a beautiful walking path lined with botanical specimens from all over the world. It took us about 40 minutes to walk to the castle from our hotel, which was in the old part of Montreux. I shot frequently as we approached the castle, paying particular attention to how the morning light was defining the forms of the castle. In the photo, I like how the diagonals formed by the hills and tree line draw the eye to the castle. The atmosphere also plays nice here providing enough detail in the hills and Alps without stealing attention from the the castle itself. Sounds a bit like composing a painting!

Château de Chillion – midday light

After taking an interesting audio tour of the castle, I shot exteriors from the other side. My favorite is shown above. The task was a little tougher because there were a fair number of people out by then, which is a perfect way to ruin the medieval mood if you know what I mean. I was able to shoot during windows of low traffic but ended up having to take a couple of folks out with Photoshop to get the look and feel I wanted. Quite a grand structure don’t you think? The tallest tower, or the keep, originally dates to the 11th century. It was a refuge tower and a symbol of power. The keep was raised twice during castle’s life, most recently in the 14th century. We could actually see the lines in the stonework where the additions had been made. Kind of like adding on to your house to impress your neighbors I guess.

After walking all the way back and grabbing lunch along the way, I convinced Donna to go back with me before a late dinner for some sunset shots. I ran around like a madman taking photos as the day drew to an end as Donna sat on a bench near the entrance reading a book on her kindle. I love that thing!

I am dizzy with photos to share. I was inspired by these in particular today so I hope you enjoyed this daylong visual journey with the Château de Chillon.
