Bern parliament building by day and night

Bern Parliament Building by Night

There are a number of significant buildings in Bern, Switzerland and the shot above is of one of them. The Swiss parliament and government building was completed in 1902 and it is now a prominent part of Bern’s skyline. The granite slabs in front of the building, which came from the Alps, were not always there. They were placed during a renovation in 2004 when a car park that dominated the space was converted into a square. The white streak of light that you see in the lower right is the border of an area that contains 26 water jets hidden below the surface. I visited the square several times to shoot in different light conditions and every time I arrived there were children running through the jets having a great time while getting some relief from the warm weather. If you look closely toward the lower part of the photograph, you can see a horizontal streak of light, which is what happens when a local resident rides a bike through your shot. In general, I find I get the best night shots when I shoot just before the the sky goes completely dark. The long exposure allows the camera’s sensor to harvest enough light to create an awesome glow during final processing. It is pretty nifty how the reflected light from the sky causes the granite slabs to glow as well.

Bellevue Hotel and the Bern parliament building Switzerland

Our hotel (right) and the Bern parliament building from the river

To give you some context, the photo above shows the backside of the parliament building. It’s the one with the green dome on top. Yes, the river is really that green. I am not sure why but it looked sparkling clean and made me want to jump right in. To the right of the parliament building is our hotel, the Bellevue Palace. I shot this one pretty early too, so I was shooting from the bridge by myself. Donna was at the hotel sleeping in, which is what most normal people do on vacation. Call me obsessed but everyday was an adventure filled with possibilities and I did not want to miss a beat!
