Awestruck in the Lauterbrunnen Valley

The Lauterbrunnen Valley as seen from Mannlichen

This is the beauty that awaited us after our two days in Bern. The Lauterbrunnen Valley is perhaps the most beautiful natural scenery I have ever seen in my life. My knees became weak when I saw this first hand. This is what I had been dreaming about since booking our flights last March. I have tried my best to capture the essence of this incredible place with fidelity and bring it home to you in my photographs. If you right-click the photo and select “open in new window,” you will see the full 1500 pixel image and all of the interesting detail in the photo.

To increase our chances of seeing good weather here, we planned four full days in the area. Everywhere in the valley is actually quite easy to reach. The Swiss have people moving down to a science and it does not matter what elevation you desire. Our train from Bern took us to Interlaken Ost where we then took a 20 minute train ride to Lauterbrunnen. We then hopped on a cable car to get to the top of the cliff, followed by another quick train to Murren. Once we arrived in Murren, we took about 50 steps to the Eiger Guesthouse, which we called home for the duration of our stay. To give you some perspective and the lay of the land, I have provided a picture below with a few call-outs of the areas we visited.

Once settled, we went on a few self-guided hikes that originated from Murren. They are indicated in the photo above and I have some pictures that I took along the way that I will share in other posts. Each of the hikes took between two and three hours. All trails were very well marked and were full of beautiful scenery. We could have spent another week there just hiking around!

After our hike down to Lauterbrunnen, we had lunch at the Oberland Hotel before making our way up to Wengen and Mannlichen to take the photo above. The photo below is a quick shot I took of the Oberland Hotel in Lauterbrunnen where we had lunch. You can see the 1000ft waterfall in the background. I remember just looking around in amazement trying to figure out how a place so beautiful could actually exist. It was the closest thing to visual perfection that I have ever seen on vacation.

I will get a few more posts done in the next few days before I will have to take another break while I am in Asia on business. Luckily, Donna is flying to Hong Kong to meet me for the weekend giving me some time to shoot Hong Kong before we head to Beijing for more business. Crazy but true!

thanks so much for posting these fabulous pictures. I have to go there.

  2. Awestruck with the pictures and your travel opportunities! I travel a lot, but it has to do much more with my van’s odometer… Lovely… just “fantastical” (my 16 year old’s favorite word lately). I think it fits, though. It really is hard to imagine such “visual perfection” (loved that phrase) exists. I sat and stared at the 1st photo for quite a while. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the comments Sherry, Chris and Margaret. Switzerland is an awesome place and I am happy that you are getting a sense of it from the photos. Sherry, Spain is on the list and it will probably be combined with the south of France at sone point. Margaret, everyone that has been to Switzerland said this would be an amazing place. They were spot on and it exceeded my expectations in every way!
