Stunning views at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

For the benefit of those that have never been to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, I thought I would share a series of photos I took that were among the most impressionable from our visit. After spending some time at the Santa Barbara Mission, we continued up the road a bit to see what the local botanic garden had to offer. What we found was a sanctuary of beauty and serenity built upon exquisite exhibits of California native plants set in beautifully designed landscapes.

Along our walk at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

In the scene above, I found the rhythm within the canopy of twisted limbs irresistible. Even though the sun was high, which usually makes the landscape painfully flat, the garden was rich with photo opportunities as the sun pierced its lush vegitation.

Serene beauty at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

It was almost like the legion of redwoods above were inviting us to continue on our way through the garden. There were a few people around but we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Nice!

As we made our way through the commanding redwoods

In this scene, I love the way the broken shadow gives way to the sea of light at the end of the path. The sound dampened by the perfectly articulated redwoods made it seem as though they were intentionally protecting us from the rigors daily life outside. I am thankful that taking up painting has opened my eyes to the natural beauty around me. My eyes now see in complete compositions and the slightest amount of color now jumps to the forefront of my vision.

The dappled sunlit path and perfectly choreographed medley of native plants begged for the photo above. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend that you go for a walk here. There is an admission but it is well worth it. The garden would also made a perfect plein air location with its relative solitude, abundant subject matter and daylong protection from the California sun.

A most gorgeous place, Lee! I have only been on Hwy 101 along the Pacific coast of Santa Barbara. It sure is a beautiful place, though. I remember driving through the redwood forests and just being completely awed. Stunning photos for a tree and green lover like myself!

Absolutely beautiful Lee. As you said, an amazing place for Plein Air painting – and photography!

Thanks ladies. My son just got back from a bunch of places in California including Sequoia. The trees in his photos were amazing. After visiting the garden, I would like to now get to Yosemite and Sequoia National Park. Maybe next year after I get my son married off next June! Have a good week. /Lee/

  4. Great photos! I’ve never been there but I think I have a new trip in mind sometime in the next couple of weeks now… 🙂
