Weekly Travel Photo – San Francisco Trolley

Trolley Bus in San Francisco

I just love these things. Since I was traveling alone to San Francisco this time, I was able to set up my tripod and camp out a for a bit by the Ferry Building and wait for trolleys to arrive. You can hop on these and ride to the wharf for two dollars. Better have correct change though!

It was late in the day so the long-ish shadows worked in my favor. It was also trying to rain off an on so I was a little concerned about my gear getting wet. As each trolley arrived,  I looked to the tall buildings on my right and prayed that the clouds would open up long enough to let the sun illuminate the trolly as I waited for the riders to hop on.

I feel that this image worked out visually in more ways than one. I really like how the complementary opposites play in the photo. The orange bus against the blue sky for one, and to my surprise, the blue and orange jackets too! I also like how the yellow on the stripe on the bus is also carried through by the distant pale yellow umbrellas.

I can’t walk down the street any more without try to compose a shot in my mind! I will be heading to Santa Barbara for Memorial Day weekend with my favorite travel companion. Hoping to snap some cool shots of the ever present Spanish Revival architecture while we are there. To much fun!

This is my favorite of all your photos Lee, I would love to paint it…maybe one of your challenges sometime?

  2. Lee says:

Thanks Dana. The trolleys are great fun to look at and make excellent subjects. Thanks for the suggestion for a future challenge. You are right, it would be a lot of fun to paint so I will definitely give it some thought. Thanks as always for the visit!

Wow! This photo has me scratching my head. Why? Because that trolley is obviously from an earlier era (40’s, 50’s? 60’s?), and yet the modern architecture seen around it and the clothing of the people…I love photos like this and I love trolleys and I love that the trolley itself is a throwback to an earlier and simpler time! Gorgeous shot, Lee!!!
