June 2010 Painting Challenge Photo

As fate would have it, you are getting June’s challenge a little earlier in the month than usual because Donna and I are in Santa Barbara for some fun for the Memorial Day weekend. I have work in LA this week so I wanted to make sure the challenge was ready to go before we left.

Light, people, and an interesting old San Francisco trolley — what could make for a better challenge? As I was putting this photo together for a Weekly Travel Photo, I thought, “Man, this would be a fun one to paint!” To set the mood, envision the late afternoon sun making its way behind the Embarcadero high rise buildings over my right shoulder. The clouds were moving briskly toward the San Francisco Bay, which sits just behind the Port of San Francisco Ferry Building to my left, was threatening to sprinkle me and my camera at any moment. As the clouds passed above me, the sun illuminated the scene in front of me for very brief and precious moments. Fortunately, I was able to snap this picture when the light and shadow came together as the trolley waited for its riders to board!

Thanks to all that participate in the challenge. It sure makes it more fun to put them together!

Please use the form below to submit your painting by the last day of June. Your picture should be a high-quality jpg image that is at least 480 pixels along its longest dimension at 72 pixels per inch.

  1. Thank’s Lee for the early post, great reference photo.
    Horst

  2. Lee says:

You are welcome Horst. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

  3. Oh, you are so generous to let us use this gorgeous photo. I like this scene so much, I might need to do it on a big birch panel and hang it on my wall. The hardest part will be trying to put my own spin on it. It’s so perfect already, the temptation is to copy it exactly.

  4. Lee says:

Glad you like it Lesley! Personally, I love the depth of the metal on the top of the trolley. The HDR process is great for pulling the subtle variations of surfaces, which makes them more fun to paint. My goal is to bring as much information into the photo so those that cannot make it to San Francisco can still paint something from there with confidence. Have fun!
