Basilica of the Sacre Coeur

From time to time, I will post some of my favorite photos from my travels. This shot is of the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur, “Basilica of the Sacred Heart”, pronounced [sakʁe kœʁ]). The landmark is a Roman Catholic basilica in Paris, France, and is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in Paris.

During our trip to Paris last summer, we planned a morning to visit the Eiffel Tower. While ascending the tower either by foot or elevator, you get a multi-level breathtaking view of of Paris. Honestly, standing on top of the Eiffel Tower is by far the best way to grasp the enormity of the city and the scale of its landmarks. Virtually every landmark from Notre Dame to the Arc de Triomphe is visible from the observation decks.

While on the second level of the tower, we noticed the amazing structure in this photograph on a distant hill. The architectural elements were stunning and the fact that it was sitting on the hill made it all the more interesting. Donna quickly flipped open our Rick Steves guide to pin down what we were seeing. The weather was beautiful that day so after we finished up at the tower, we jumped in at cab and took a $30 ride to the basilica. Once we arrived, we were blown away by the quality of the travertine, which was quarried in France and exudes calcite, which ensures that the basilica remains white even with weathering and pollution.

As we approached the basilica, I looked up and snapped this picture. One of those precious moments that for me all came together in a single click. The clouds were as you see them, dark one one side and light on the other, and the direction of the light turned out much more interesting than I thought it was at the time. I did amp up the contrast with Photoshop but did not manipulate the picture much beyond that.
